UC Riverside takes down No. 3 UC Irvine

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -- UC Riverside snapped a four-match winless streak in grand style on Wednesday evening, knocking off the No. 3 team in the nation, UC Irvine, by a score of 2-1.

Neither team was able to score through the first 78 minutes of play, but the Highlanders had plenty of great chances throughout the match. Anteaters goalkeeper Michael Breslin came up big, stopping near point blank shots by Romario Lomelli, Ulises Mosqueda and Johnny Tovar all in the first half

It was more of the same in the second half as Breslin kept the shutout in tact by blocking a Tyler Miguel shot and deflecting the ricochet to keep the Highlanders off the board.

UC Riverside finally broke through in the 79th minute as Ricardo Ruiz's corner kick sailed through the Irvine box, and found Philipp Dominique for the one-timer.

The lead was short-lived, as a minute and a half later, Stephen Copley took down a member of the 'Eaters just inside the UCR 18. Eduardo Calzada converted on the subsequent penalty kick to tie the score at one.

The Highlanders didn't let up, though, and in the 89th minute, their perseverance paid off. UC Irvine was unable to clear the ball out of its defensive end, and the Eaters were called for a foul as they took down Copley a few yards away from the Irvine goal.

That gave the Highlanders a penalty kick, and Hector Romo beat Breslin to the left side of the goal to give UC Riverside the win.
