The Wildcats won the 1991 NCAA title in the Saint Paul Civic Center by beating Boston University 8-7 in three overtimes in what is considered to be one of, if not the greatest game in college hockey history.

Northern Michigan finished the season  38-5-4 overall record, which included a 26-game unbeaten streak to finish the season.

They were literally unbeatable at home, putting together a 22-0-2 record in its own rink.

The Wildcats also captured the Western Collegiate Hockey Assocation regular season and tournament titles. The team set or tied 50 school records during the season.

Forward Scott Beattie was the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, while Goalie Bill Pye, defensemen Lou Melon and Brad Werenka, the Hobey Baker runner-up, were also part of the all-tournament team.

The 1984 Falcons had one of the roughest and most exciting roads of any NCAA champion team.

Coach Jerry York’s team needed overtime to defeat Boston University 8-7 in the quarterfinals and four overtimes to win the national championship game against Minnesota-Duluth 5-4. In addition, their semifinal game against Michigan State was decided by a single goal, 2-1.

The Falcons finished the season 34-8-2, including a 17-game win streak. BG was led offensively by Dan Kane, who scored 72 points on 24 goals and 48 assists, and Gary Galley, who posted 67 points on 15 goals and 52 assists.

Goaltender Gary Kruzich was named the NCAA tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, while Dave Ellett and Galley were also on the all-tournament team. The team was captained by Mike Pikul and Wayne Wilson, who is currently the head coach at RIT.
