From 1981-1989, the GSU Eagles won three Division 1-AA National Championships. Head coach Erskine 'Erk' Russell attributed some of his success to the drainage ditch running by the team's practice facility which he named Beautiful Eagle Creek. Three decades later, the team still draws inspiration from the creek.
