In Her Words HOW TRACK AND FIELD CHANGED MY LIFE

You’ve been a part of all four of my college years. Walking onto Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University’s Lady Rattlers team, I did not know what great of an impact you would have on my life. Being a college athlete aided my growth in a multitude of aspects. You taught me so many lessons that molded me into the woman I am today.

Through rigorous training, you taught me self-discipline. In order to do what I love, I had to endure what I did not; you weakened my body in order to build it up and make it stronger. Competition forced me to always do better and bring others along with me. Being placed in events I did not want to compete in built my character. Overcoming injury and experiencing loss built my resilience. Being a part of a family rather than a team gave me a sense of belonging and a drive to do excel for something bigger than myself. You allowed me to meet individuals whom I will have in my life forever-coaches, teammates, and even fellow competitors.

The lessons I learned from you I have incorporated into my life today. Training for you guided me to the career field that I am in now – the United States Army. My knowledge of throwing allowed me to teach my fellow battle buddies how to properly throw a grenade.

I grew with you throughout all the mistakes made and achievements earned. You were my escape and my enjoyment. You are what I advocate for; I support and encourage others to take part in you, also.

Thank you for all of the lessons learned. Thank you for all of the winning moments. Thank you for the family you brought into my life. Thank you for the resilient mindset you have instilled in me.
